MANTIS 5/7
Resourcefulness. That is the Mantis Clan’s advantage. In the Truest test, you’ll find plenty of new tools for the Mantis to take advantage of. First off, they receive a new Scout and a new Magistrate. The uses for Tsuruchi Ki should be familiar to most Mantis players by now; as a Tsuruchi, archery is his strength. He is also a Magistrate, and is at his most effective when hunting down the shameful enemies of the Mantis. You may even use Allegations first to power his ranged attack or remove a threat from the battle. Yoritomo Harada is a new Scout who makes sure none of your troops or equipment go to waste, by recovering resources from fallen comrades. These two Personalities continue some of the themes for The Mantis that began with the Khan’s Defiance.
Moshi Mimani is a Courtier who makes sure the Mantis have one thing they use more than any other Clan, gold! She lets you get more out of what you have; if you use a Holding during your own Action Phase, you could potential get two more uses from it during combat before your next turn rolls around. She ensures you’ll be able to pay for some costly but effective Battle actions, such Ruthless Advance or Recruiting Allies from Khan’s Defiance, or Yoritomo Harada’s Recon action, or this next guy, Yoritomo Kurei.
Kurei is great as a Naval Personality with 5 Force. For 8 gold, he is an effective beatstick. However, he also can pay 3 gold to move one of your Personalities (including himself) into the battle where he is needed most. You won’t need to pack as many movement tricks as other Clans, since this general guides you into battle every turn.
Finally, Moshi Kiyomori provides you with some flexibility. As a Shugenja, he opens up the use of many great spells. More importantly, he comes with a Ranged Attack. It’s only a strength 3 if he’s by himself, but it becomes stronger when he is with one of the powerhouses of the Clan, such as Kurei or one of your Orochi.
Then there are two Followers who could find a home in Broken Wave City for the remainder of the arc. Traveling Magistrate pays for another attachment or battle action, making him well worth the cost. Devoted Yojimbo protects you from disaster, straightening a key Personality. A resourceful Mantis player will find many uses for these.
